Headaches can occur both as an independent disease and as an accompanying symptom or consequence of another disease. As varied as the types of headache are, so are their causes. Common causes of headaches are migraine attacks, muscular tension -especially of the neck, headaches caused by medication, high blood pressure, respiratory infections especially of the paranasal sinuses and concussions. In some cases, the cause of the headache and its origin is well understood, as in the case of neuritis. In some cases, it is not known exactly why a condition triggers a headache, as in migraine.
The way a headache feels plays an important role in finding the cause and pinpointing it to a specific disease. For example, electrical pain in the face is typical of an inflammation of the nerves, known as trigeminal neuralgia, while throbbing headaches can be an indication of increased blood pressure or inflammation of a blood vessel. In addition, the temporal course of the headache also plays an important role. Do they occur abruptly or do they develop slowly and increasingly? How long do they last, only a few seconds or hours to days? And by which external factors are they triggered, improved or worsened? The location of the pain in the head also plays a major role in the diagnosis. Does the pain occur only on one side of the head or on both sides? Can a specific point be identified or is the pain more diffusely distributed across the head? Accompanying symptoms such as sensitivity to light, sensitivity to sound, nausea or visual disturbances are also decisive in assigning the headache to a specific disease. If possible, the headache should be written down in a so-called “headache diary” if it is not an easily identifiable cause, stating the time course, the type of headache, its accompanying symptoms and severity. This helps the medical staff to assign a diagnosis to the headache and then to treat it correctly.
