Aneurysms occur when blood vessels can no longer withstand blood pressure. On the one hand, this can be the case with unstable vessel walls, for example due to hereditary diseases or connective tissue weaknesses. Arteriosclerosis can also cause changes in the vessel walls. But high blood pressure can also lead to a pathological expansion of the blood vessels. Thus, smoking, obesity or persistent lack of exercise, as well as other causes of hypertension, increase the risk.
Aneurysms usually remain largely asymptomatic while they are still small. Stabbing, persistent pains in the affected body regions which frequently radiate to other regions such as the legs are symptomatic. Palpable, pulsating structures under the skin surface are also typical signs of an aneurysm.
As a general rule, since a ruptured aneurysm poses an absolute risk to life, it is important to detect them as early as possible. However, the frequent absence of symptoms often makes this difficult. However, aneurysms can be detected in time through targeted screening examinations. At our locations in Munich, we offer comprehensive preventive examinations in which we can detect any widening of the blood vessels, especially in the aorta.
An aortic aneurysm is often asymptomatic and may go undetected for a long time. Early detection and, if necessary, treatment can be life-saving.
